Transform Your Look: A Guide to Coloring Wigs and Extensions

Understanding Your Hair Type

Before mixing bleach, check what you are working with. Wigs and extensions do not always react the same way as hair growing from the scalp. They may have been processed before purchase, coated with silicone, dyed darker, or treated to look smooth.

Human Hair is Best for Bleach and Permanent Color

Human hair wigs and extensions can usually be lightened, toned, and colored, but the result depends on hair quality. Virgin human hair lifts more evenly than hair that has already been dyed or chemically treated.

Remy hair can also color well, but not all Remy hair is unprocessed. If the hair is very dark, very shiny, or very inexpensive, it may have a color coating. That coating can make bleach lift unevenly.

Synthetic Hair Should Not Be Bleached

Synthetic fibers do not contain melanin, so bleach has nothing natural to lift. Permanent dye also will not penetrate synthetic fibers the way it does human hair. If you want a lighter synthetic wig, buy it in the lighter shade instead.

Keep the Goal Within Reach

At home, aim for soft caramel, honey, copper, chocolate, beige blonde, or subtle face-framing highlights. Going from jet black to icy platinum is much harder and more damaging.

A safe home color goal is usually two to three levels lighter than the starting shade. You can always do a second careful session later, but you cannot undo breakage.

Gather the Best Products and Tools Before You Begin

The best home results come from using beauty supply products, not random household items. Never use laundry bleach, cleaning bleach, peroxide from a first-aid bottle, or lemon juice and sunlight. Those methods can make hair brittle, patchy, or orange.

Here is what to keep in your coloring kit.
